Centering Opening Lifting The Fire

Lifting

This is the time for growth. The vessel grows higher and higher causing the wall to be thinned and become tall. During this process one can sense the sensitivity in the slower speed of the wheel, and the intimacy of the pressure of the fingers on the clay. The relationship of the Potter to the clay is rooted in the developing purpose of the vessel as it is carefully shaped.

It is in the Lifting phase that purpose comes forth. Each hand moves in synchronization to the other in order for the vessel to be shaped. If, when both hands move the clay upward, the inside hand position is below the outer, the vessel bows outward making it round to the body of the form, if the inside position is below the outer, the vessel takes on an inward shape giving it a slender form. Of specific note in this phase is the location of the Potter's hands upon the clay. While still working in conjunction with each other, they never lose their point of contact, each having different functions; one is shaping inside the vessel, developing the inner relationship, one is working from outside the vessel shaping through the experiences of life. Together in harmony the purpose comes forth. Careful note is taken by the Potter to the “lip” of the pot, being sure to give its form a distinctive top ending. The Potter's hands complete the form of the vessel with this delicate finishing touch.

So it is with us. We have been Centered, Opened, and now we are ready to be Lifted into a unique purpose. The gentleness of the Father during this time of growth and forming in our lives is welcomed. It is time to develop a more intimate relationship to our Maker, to spend time with Him, to get to know His voice. We are lifted a little higher each time His hands move over us. While we are being shaped into a specific type of vessel we must be careful not to confuse our shape to our true purpose. While our shape or form may lie in the specific training, learning, or vocation we experience, it is merely the expression of our purpose. Our purpose lies in the action of serving and of being poured out. Our shape has given us the ability to do so. In humility, we know He will pour through us. Now completed in form and shape, are we ready to be used? Not yet. There is more to the Process. The clay must be put aside to dry, and then be put into the kiln for firing. This brings us to our next phase, the Fire!
